Synopsis
Explorer craft U.S.S. Palomino races toward Earth through deep space after a fruitless 18-month search for life. The crew of fie spot something on the holograph: a black hole, crushed remnants of a gigantic star surrounded by gravity so powerful that it sucks entire suns to oblivion.

Hovering near it is a ghost ship, identified as the U.S.S. Cygnus, a half-mile log craft presumed lost for 20 years. As the scientists take a closer look, their small ship is damaged and they must land on the Cygnus for repairs. As the travelers step into the giant ghost ship, lasers strip away their weapons. Sentry robots escort them to the command tower. Maximilian, a monstrous robot, and Dr. Hans Reinhardt, the mad genius in charge of the former mission, appear.

Reinhardt explains how he had dismissed all members of his crew and allowd them to return home, while he had decided to stay. Soon it is revealed that the robots running the ship are actually the remainder of the crew. Kept alive electronically, they are programmed to perform specific tasks. Dr. Reinhardt is preparing to enter the awesome black hole and commands one of his visitors to accompany him on his trip.

There is no escape. The space travelers desperately try to return to the Palomino, but it is destroyed by Reinhardt. As they hurry to Reinhardt's probe ship, their only other alternative for escape, the realize the cannot change the course which was pre-programmed by the crazy scientist. The probe ship departs on a trip into the most powerful force in the Universe, heading toward the black hole that holds whatever eternity has in store for it.

THE BLACK HOLE is an awesome movie experience of amazing special effects. Electronic robots pit Man against machine and the film builds to a climax that leaves one with many more questions than it answers about Space and the Universe.
